What is Soda Blasting?
Soda Blasting is a non-abrasive paint and coating removal method which can be safely used on most surfaces. Particles of sodium bicarbonate also known as baking soda are propelled by dry, compressed air, through a pressure blast pot, specially designed to accommodate the flow of sodium bicarbonate without causing it to clomp together and lose its effectiveness.

How does it work?
Upon impact on the surface the sodium bicarbonate particles release energy (a minuet explosion) causing the paint or coating to be pulverized or in other words reduced to a fine dust.

What are the advantages of soda blasting?
Soda Blasting does not leave a profile or “signature” on the surface. It does not reduce the metal’s density or build up heat, therefore avoiding the potential for sheet metal warping. The metal surface is not broken thus preventing surface oxidation. Under ideal conditions sodium bicarbonate will leave a protective coating on the surface cleaned. This allows for time to pass before the surface has to be painted, unlike a sand blasted surface that has to be painted immediately. Also, there is the environmental factor. With sand blasting, crystalline silica is present in the air. When inhaled over time it can cause respiratory disease, with sodium bicarbonate being non-toxic it has no such hazard and is environmentally friendly to.

Does soda blasting remove rust?
While sodium bicarbonate will remove paint, primer and plastic body filler, it will not remove heavy rust. However it will remove flakey surface rust. We do offer additional media’s for heavy rust removal. Please see below.

What are the costs involved in Soda Blasting?
Sodium Bicarbonate is a one time use media, once the soda particle comes in contact with the substrate it becomes a very fine dust which can not be re-used. While cost may be a bit higher than other media blasting, the cost varies from project to project, car to car or item to item.

What other types of blasting or service do you provide?
Additionally to Soda Bicarbonate, we blast using other media such as Garnet, Aluminum Oxide, Glass/Plastic Bead, Silicon Carbide and Walnut Shells. Each media has a variety of uses (e.g. heavy rust, powder coating removal, soft or fragile substrates).
